Decorative Wall Finishes in Miami — Luxury Artisan Finishes

Decorative wall finishes are artisan-applied coatings that transform ordinary walls into works of art. They include Venetian plaster, Marmorino, lime wash, lime paint, microcement, faux finishes, and metallic finishes — each bringing its own texture, depth, and character to a space.

In Miami, decorative wall finishes are used in luxury residential and commercial interiors where design quality, durability, and uniqueness matter. They outperform paint in every measurable way — lasting longer, resisting humidity and mold, and delivering an aesthetic that cannot be replicated by conventional materials.

Exotic Wall Finishes founder Gian Carlo Sagasti is a Novacolor Global Ambassador (2017) and has been applying decorative finishes in Miami since 2015. He has been working with Italian lime plasters since 2003.

What Are Decorative Wall Finishes?

Decorative wall finishes are hand-applied coatings that go beyond paint. They are mineral-based, breathable, and artisan-executed — each one a custom installation rather than a product from a can.

The main types of decorative wall finishes we install:

Venetian Plaster

A polished, marble-like finish burnished to a high-gloss or satin sheen. Reflects light and creates depth. Best for feature walls, living rooms, dining rooms, and ceilings. Venetian plaster in Miami.

Marmorino

A matte, stone-like finish troweled for texture. Absorbs light and produces a warm, organic appearance. Best for whole-room applications, kitchens, and bathrooms. Marmorino in Miami.

Lime Wash

A mineral-based finish applied in translucent layers. Soft, matte, and breathable. Best for historic homes, exterior stucco, and interiors seeking a natural aesthetic. Lime wash in Miami.

Lime Paint

A thicker, more opaque mineral finish. Breathable, mold-resistant, and durable. Best for interiors and exteriors where a matte, mineral surface is desired. Lime paint in Miami.

Microcement

A seamless, cement-based coating with no grout lines. Durable and waterproof when sealed. Best for modern bathrooms, kitchens, floors, and feature walls. Microcement in Miami.

Faux Finishes

Custom hand-painted finishes that mimic marble, wood, stone, or metal. Fully bespoke to your design vision. Faux finishes in Miami.

Metallic Finishes

Mica, bronze, gold, or silver pigments that create shimmer and depth. Used on feature walls, ceilings, and accent surfaces.

Key Characteristics of Decorative Wall Finishes

  • Artisan-applied: Hand-crafted by a master
  • Durable: 10–30+ years depending on the finish
  • Breathable: Lime-based finishes allow moisture vapor to pass through
  • Mold-resistant: Alkaline pH prevents growth
  • Custom: Fully bespoke to your design vision
  • Timeless: Adds value and elegance to any space

Why Decorative Wall Finishes Work in Miami

Miami’s climate and design sensibility make decorative wall finishes an especially strong choice.

Humidity Resistance Through Breathability

Lime-based finishes are breathable — they allow moisture vapor to pass through the wall rather than trapping it inside. This is critical in Miami, where trapped moisture leads to mold, mildew, and structural damage. Paint traps moisture; lime-based finishes don’t.

Mold and Mildew Resistance

The alkaline pH of lime (12–13) creates an environment where mold and mildew cannot grow. In bathrooms, kitchens, laundry rooms, and coastal properties, decorative finishes resist the biological growth that plagues painted surfaces.

Salt Air Durability for Coastal Properties

For homes in Miami Beach, Key Biscayne, and other coastal areas, salt air damages conventional finishes. Lime-based decorative finishes are unaffected. Mineral materials don’t react to salt.

Seamless Surfaces — No Grout, No Seams

Unlike tile, decorative finishes have no grout lines. Unlike wallpaper, they have no seams. The wall becomes a single continuous surface — ideal for modern Miami interiors where clean lines matter.

Timeless Aesthetic

Decorative finishes have been used in European architecture for centuries. In Miami, they’re used in:

  • Mediterranean Revival homes in Coral Gables and the Roads
  • Historic properties in Coconut Grove
  • Modern luxury condos in Brickell and Edgewater
  • Waterfront estates in Miami Beach and Bal Harbour
  • Hospitality and commercial interiors in Wynwood, South Beach, and Downtown

Our Decorative Finish Process — Step by Step

Step 1 — Consultation and Design

Every decorative finish project begins with a consultation. We discuss:

  • The type of finish you’re considering
  • The style and mood of the space
  • Color palette and lighting conditions
  • Specific surfaces to be finished
  • Inspiration images or reference materials

We provide sample boards so the client can see and approve the finish in their own lighting before installation.

Step 2 — Surface Preparation

  • Repair cracks, holes, and imperfections
  • Sand and level the surface to a smooth finish
  • Prime with the appropriate primer for the finish type
  • Mask and protect floors, furniture, trim, and adjacent surfaces

Step 3 — Base Coats

Depending on the finish, we apply 2 to 3 base coats of the appropriate material — lime putty for plasters, cement base for microcement, etc.

Step 4 — Finish Coats

We apply 2 to 3 thin layers of the finished material. Each layer is worked to the desired texture and sheen — burnished for high-gloss, troweled for matte, layered for depth.

Step 5 — Sealing

Once cured, we apply a protective sealer suited to the finish and location. Wet areas receive a breathable waterproof sealer. High-traffic areas receive a protective topcoat. Tadelakt receives a soap treatment.

Step 6 — Final Inspection

We walk the project with the client, review the finish under natural and artificial light, and provide written care instructions.

Frequently Asked Questions About Decorative Wall Finishes in Miami

What types of decorative wall finishes do you offer?

Venetian plaster, Marmorino, lime wash, lime paint, microcement, faux finishes, metallic finishes, and custom textures.

How long do decorative wall finishes last?

Depending on the finish: Venetian plaster and Marmorino last 20+ years. Lime wash and lime paint last 5–10 years. Microcement lasts 10–15 years. Faux finishes last 10–20 years.

Can decorative finishes be applied over existing walls?

Yes, as long as the substrate is sound and properly prepared.

Can decorative finishes be applied over paint?

In most cases, existing paint must be removed before lime-based finishes are applied. Lime needs a mineral substrate to bond properly.

Are decorative wall finishes waterproof?

Lime-based finishes are water-resistant but not waterproof on their own. In wet areas we apply a breathable waterproof sealer. Microcement and Tadelakt can be fully waterproofed.

Are decorative finishes mold-resistant?

Yes. Lime’s alkaline pH (12–13) prevents mold and mildew growth.

How do you clean decorative wall finishes?

Dust weekly with a soft cloth. For marks, use a damp cloth with mild soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners.

Can decorative finishes be repaired if damaged?

Yes. Minor scratches can be touched up. Larger repairs require a skilled artisan to blend new material into the existing finish.

How much do decorative wall finishes cost in Miami?

Pricing depends on the finish type, area, and preparation required. General range: $5 to $35+ per square foot depending on finish. We provide project-specific quotes.

Do you work outside of Miami?

We serve Miami-Dade, Broward, and Palm Beach counties. For larger projects, we can travel further.

How long does a decorative finish project take?

Varies by finish and complexity. A feature wall takes 2–3 days. A full room takes 3–5 days. Larger projects can take 1–2 weeks.

Do you offer color matching?

Yes. We work with mineral pigments and can match existing colors or develop custom shades. Sample boards are provided before installation.
