What Is Venetian Plaster?

Venetian plaster — known in Italy as intonaco veneziano or stucco veneziano — is a traditional lime-based wall finish that dates back to ancient Rome and reached its artistic peak during the Venetian Renaissance. It is made from three primary ingredients:

• Aged lime putty — calcium hydroxide that has been slaked and stored for months to years
• Marble dust — fine crystalline aggregate that gives the finish its depth and luminosity
• Natural pigments — mineral-based colorants that won’t fade under UV exposure

Unlike paint, which sits on the surface of a wall as a thin film, Venetian plaster becomes part of the wall itself. Each layer is troweled on thinly, then compressed and burnished with a stainless steel trowel. The compression closes the surface, creating a dense, marble-like finish with depth, movement, and light reflection that no paint can replicate.

The Chemistry Behind the Finish

When lime putty is exposed to air, it undergoes a process called carbonation — it absorbs carbon dioxide and slowly converts back into calcium carbonate (limestone). This is why Venetian plaster hardens over time. The longer it cures, the harder and more durable it becomes. A properly applied Venetian plaster wall can last decades — often outliving the drywall behind it.

Gloss Levels: From Matte to Mirror

Venetian plaster can be finished at multiple sheen levels depending on how much burnishing is applied:

• Matte — soft, chalky, and understated
• Satin — subtle sheen with gentle light movement
• Polished — high-gloss, mirror-like reflection
• High-gloss (Grassello) — maximum burnishing, near-glass finish

Each level requires a different trowel technique and a different amount of time on the wall. High-gloss finishes take significantly longer to achieve and are priced accordingly.

Why Venetian Plaster Works in Miami’s Climate

Miami’s climate is one of the harshest in the United States for interior finishes. Average humidity ranges from 70% to 90%, salt air penetrates coastal homes year-round, and temperatures swing between air-conditioned interiors and tropical exteriors. Most wall finishes fail under these conditions — paint peels, wallpaper bubbles, and drywall cracks.

Venetian plaster performs differently.

Humidity Resistance Through Breathability

Lime is naturally breathable and alkaline. It allows moisture vapor to pass through the wall rather than trapping it inside. Paint, by contrast, forms a plastic film that traps moisture against the drywall — the perfect environment for mold.

Our Venetian Plaster Process — Step by Step

Every Venetian plaster project we complete follows the same rigorous process. It has been refined over two decades and is the reason our finishes last.

Step 1 — Consultation and Surface Assessment

Every project begins with a site visit or a detailed video consultation. We assess:

• The substrate (drywall, plaster, concrete, or existing finish)
• Moisture readings and potential water intrusion
• Surface flatness and any cracks or damage
• Lighting and the way light will hit the finished wall
• Room function (bathroom, kitchen, living space, feature wall)
• The client’s desired sheen level and color palette

We then provide a written proposal that includes the finish specification, timeline, and any surface preparation required.

Step 2 — Surface Preparation

Preparation is 60% of the final result. We do not skip this.

• Repair all cracks, holes, and imperfections
• Sand and level the surface to a smooth, uniform finish
• Prime with an alkali-resistant primer suitable for lime
• Mask and protect floors, furniture, trim, and adjacent surfaces

In bathrooms and kitchens, we may recommend a waterproof membrane behind the plaster for full moisture protection.

Step 3 — Base Coats

We apply 2 to 3 base coats of lime putty, each troweled on thinly and allowed to cure. Base coats build the foundation for the finish and create an even surface for the pigmented layers.

Step 4 — Finish Coats

This is where the artistry happens. We apply 2 to 3 thin layers of pigmented Venetian plaster. Each layer is:

• Troweled on at a specific angle
• Left to cure to the correct stage
• Burnished with a stainless steel trowel to compress and polish the surface

The number of layers and the amount of burnishing determine the final sheen — from soft matte to mirror-like gloss. Each wall is completed by hand in one continuous session to avoid visible trowel marks.

Step 5 — Sealing

Once the finish has cured, we apply a breathable sealer or natural wax. Sealing provides additional protection against moisture, staining, and everyday wear while preserving the breathability that makes lime plaster so effective in Miami’s climate.

Step 6 — Final Inspection and Care Instructions

We walk the project with the client, review the finish under natural and artificial light, touch up any imperfections, and provide written care instructions. We’re available for questions long after the job is complete.
