How to Apply Venetian Plaster: Substrate Prep, Coats & Burnishing
1. Substrate Preparation (Level 5 Specification)
Substrates must be smooth, structurally sound, and finished to an ASTM C840 Level 5 drywall specification (skim coated smooth). Joint compound should be fully cured and sanded with no gouges, ridge marks, or dust. Check moisture content with a pinless meter (below 12%) and confirm flatness does not deviate more than 1/8 inch over 10 linear feet.
2. Mineral Quartz Keying Primer
Apply one to two coats of an acrylic mineral quartz primer using a 3/8-inch nap roller. The primer must reach 100% surface opacity with the aggregate evenly distributed so the lime plaster has uniform absorption and a mechanical key. Allow the primer to cure for a minimum of 12 hours before the base coat.
3. Base Coat & Fiberglass Mesh Reinforcement
Embed 4.5 oz alkali-resistant fiberglass mesh across drywall joint seams and corners to control telegraphing and substrate movement. Trowel a uniform 1.0mm to 1.5mm scratch coat of Marmorino Coarse or Intonachino and allow it to dry for 24 hours until carbonization begins.
4. Finish Coats & Burnishing
Apply the second coat of Grassello di Calce or Marmorino Fine with a Pavan stainless beveled trowel, then a tight third coat in sweeping random arc motions to build multi-dimensional depth. Allow 12 to 24 hours of drying time between coats. Burnish the surface with high-pressure stainless blade passes while the wet edge cures to raise the sheen; mirror-polished, pre-beveled blades help avoid black metal marks.
5. Curing, Sealing & Wet Areas
Lime plaster sets by water evaporation and carbonization, absorbing atmospheric CO₂ and reverting to solid limestone; full hardness develops over about 28 days. Allow the plaster to dry 48 hours before sealing with natural Marseille olive oil soap or a hydrophobic paste wax, then buff with a clean microfiber cloth. For shower interiors and direct water exposure, specify a seamless two-component waterproof microcement system instead of lime plaster.
