Venetian Gold Aesthetic Marmorino — Coral Gables Estate

The Challenge

The homeowner had recently completed a full renovation of the main living area — including new wood beams, terracotta floors, and custom millwork. The walls, however, were still finished in the previous owner’s flat white paint, which felt cold and flat against the new design.

The design goal was to introduce warmth and depth without overpowering the room. The homeowner wanted something that felt Old World, appropriate for the Mediterranean Revival style of the home, but not ornate or overly decorative. It also needed to perform in Miami’s humidity — no peeling, no mold.

The Solution

We recommended Marmorino in a custom gold-toned pigment — a warm ochre leaning slightly toward amber, with subtle variation built into the layering. The matte finish would absorb light rather than reflect it, creating a warm, enveloping effect that would complement the room’s natural wood and terracotta palette.

The final sheen was kept at a smooth matte — almost chalky — to reinforce the room’s historic character.

The Process

Day 1 — Surface Preparation. We repaired minor cracks and imperfections from the prior renovation, sanded the walls smooth, and applied an alkali-resistant primer suitable for lime finishes. Furniture was moved to the center of the room, and floors were protected.

Day 2 — Base Coats. Two base coats of lime putty were applied, each troweled thinly and allowed to cure.

Day 3 — First Finish Coat. The first layer of pigmented Marmorino was applied — a light gold ochre mixed on site using mineral pigments. The layer was troweled in a diagonal pattern to begin building depth.

Day 4 — Final Finish Coat and Burnishing. The final layer of Marmorino was applied, this time with a slightly darker gold pigment to add depth. The walls were lightly burnished to close the surface and create a smooth matte finish.

Day 5 — Sealing and Inspection. A breathable sealer was applied to protect against moisture while maintaining breathability. The finish was reviewed with the client under natural and artificial light.

The Result

The finished walls completely transformed the room. The gold-toned Marmorino created a warm, sunlit effect even on overcast days. It reads as both historic and modern — appropriate to the Mediterranean Revival architecture without feeling like a period reproduction.

The homeowner specifically commented that the walls “feel like they’ve always been there” — which is exactly the goal of a well-executed lime finish.

Two years later, the finish remains in excellent condition with no peeling, no fading, and no maintenance required beyond routine dusting.
