Venetian plaster is a polished, marble-like lime finish that — when properly prepared and sealed — performs exceptionally well in Miami bathrooms. It’s naturally water-resistant, mold-resistant, and creates a seamless surface with no grout lines. Unlike tile, there’s no grout to clean, no mold to scrub, and no seams that can fail over time.
In Miami’s humid climate, bathrooms are one of the harshest environments for any finish. Paint peels. Wallpaper bubbles. Grout stains and grows mold. Venetian plaster performs differently — because it’s mineral-based, breathable, and can be sealed for full water resistance.
Exotic Wall Finishes has been applying Venetian plaster in Miami bathrooms since 2015. Our founder, Gian Carlo Sagasti, is a Novacolor Global Ambassador (2017) and has been working with Italian lime plasters since 2003.
Bathrooms are the toughest environment in any home. Constant moisture, steam, temperature changes, and cleaning products all take a toll. Most finishes fail. Venetian plaster — properly installed and sealed — thrives.
Venetian plaster is naturally water-resistant. With a breathable waterproof sealer, it becomes highly resistant to moisture and steam. In wet areas like showers, we install a full waterproof membrane behind the plaster for complete protection.
Lime is alkaline (pH 12–13), which prevents mold and mildew from growing. This is one of the main reasons Venetian plaster is favored in Miami bathrooms — the alkaline environment is inhospitable to biological growth.
Tile requires grout — and grout is porous, stains easily, and is the most common place for mold to grow in a bathroom. Venetian plaster has no grout lines. The surface is completely seamless, making it easier to clean and more hygienic.
No seams, no joints, no transitions between surfaces. Venetian plaster creates a continuous surface that flows around the room — an aesthetic that reads as both luxurious and modern.
Venetian plaster is harder and more durable than tile or paint. It resists scratches, stains, and impact. With proper care, it lasts 20+ years.
No scrubbing grout. No re-caulking seams. Venetian plaster is cleaned with a soft cloth and mild soap. In high-gloss finishes, a dry microfiber cloth is often enough.
| Feature | Venetian Plaster | Tile |
|---|---|---|
| Grout lines | None | Yes |
| Mold resistance | High (alkaline) | Moderate (grout harbors mold) |
| Durability | High (20+ years) | High (20+ years) |
| Maintenance | Easy | Grout requires regular cleaning |
| Aesthetic | Seamless, luxurious | Traditional |
| Waterproofing | Requires membrane + sealer | Requires waterproof backing |
| Cleaning | Soft cloth, mild soap | Grout brush, harsh cleaners |
| Repair | Artisan touch-up | Replace tiles |
Both are valid choices — but Venetian plaster delivers an aesthetic and maintenance profile that tile cannot match.
Gian Carlo Sagasti was named a Novacolor Global Ambassador in 2017 — a designation granted to a small number of artisans worldwide. Novacolor is one of Italy’s leading manufacturers of lime plasters.

Every bathroom project begins with a site visit. We assess:
We provide a written proposal including waterproofing, finish specification, and timeline.
This is the most critical step for bathroom installations.
We apply 2 to 3 base coats of lime putty. Each coat is troweled on thinly and allowed to cure.
We apply 2 to 3 thin layers of pigmented Venetian plaster. Each layer is troweled and burnished to the desired sheen — satin, polished, or high-gloss.
Once cured, we apply a breathable waterproof sealer. This protects against moisture and steam while maintaining breathability — critical for long-term performance in a bathroom.
We walk the project with the client, review the finish under bathroom lighting, and provide written care instructions.

Venetian plaster is water-resistant but not waterproof on its own. With a waterproof membrane behind the plaster and a breathable waterproof sealer over it, it performs excellently in bathrooms — better than most painted surfaces.
Yes — with proper waterproofing. We install a full waterproof membrane behind the plaster and seal the finish with a waterproof topcoat.
No. Lime’s alkaline pH (12–13) prevents mold and mildew growth. Proper sealing and ventilation also help.
Use a damp cloth with mild soap. For high-gloss finishes, a dry microfiber cloth is often enough. Avoid abrasive cleaners.
It depends on your aesthetic and budget. Venetian plaster offers a seamless, luxurious look with no grout lines. Tile is more traditional and may be more budget-friendly upfront.
20+ years with proper care and sealing.
In some cases, yes. The tile must be sound, properly prepared, and the surface flattened. We assess during consultation.
Pricing depends on bathroom size, finish level, and waterproofing requirements. As a general reference, Venetian plaster ranges from $12 to $35+ per square foot installed. Bathrooms typically cost more per square foot due to waterproofing.
A typical bathroom takes 4–6 days including waterproofing, base coats, finish coats, and sealing.
Yes. We work with mineral pigments and can match existing colors or develop custom shades.
Yes. Minor touch-ups are usually straightforward. Larger repairs require a skilled artisan.
We don’t install mechanical systems, but we can recommend partners who do. Proper ventilation is important for long-term performance.
