The Challenge
The homeowner — a repeat client — had recently completed a renovation of the master bedroom. Now they wanted to update the master bathroom, which featured dated 1980s pink marble, visible grout lines, and recurring mold problems in the shower.
Their goals:
- Eliminate grout lines throughout the bathroom
- Create a seamless, cohesive surface
- Address recurring mold in the shower
- Achieve a luxury aesthetic consistent with the rest of the home
The Solution
We proposed Venetian plaster for the entire bathroom — walls, ceiling, and shower surround — with a full waterproof membrane behind the plaster in all wet areas. A waterproof, breathable sealer would protect the finish while maintaining breathability.
The color was a soft, warm white with subtle grey undertones — chosen to keep the space bright and coastal while adding warmth.
The Process
Days 1–2 — Demolition and Substrate Prep. We removed the existing marble and prepared the substrate. New cement backer board was installed in the shower area.
Day 3 — Waterproofing. A full waterproof membrane was applied to the shower area and behind all fixtures and wet zones.
Day 4 — Priming. An alkali-resistant primer was applied throughout.
Day 5 — Base Coats. Two base coats of lime putty were applied to all walls and the ceiling.
Day 6 — First Finish Coat. A first layer of pigmented Venetian plaster was applied.
Day 7 — Final Finish Coat and Burnishing. The final layer was applied and burnished to a satin sheen.
Day 8 — Sealing and Inspection. A breathable waterproof sealer was applied throughout, including the shower surround. The finish was reviewed with the homeowner.
The Result
The bathroom was completely transformed. Every surface — walls, ceiling, shower surround — flows seamlessly without a single grout line. The Venetian plaster catches the natural light from the bathroom’s window and creates a warm, luxurious atmosphere.
Critically, the recurring mold problem was solved. Because the plaster is breathable and the shower area is fully waterproofed, moisture doesn’t accumulate. Two years later, the bathroom remains pristine with no signs of mold.
