Textured Elegance — Hand-Troweled Marmorino in Miami Beach

The Challenge

The homeowner — a designer — had recently completed a modern renovation of a Miami Beach residence. The interiors were clean and contemporary, with white walls, natural stone floors, and expansive windows overlooking the water. But the walls felt too flat and cold against the softer elements of the space.

The goal was to introduce a hand-crafted, textured finish that would visually and physically warm the room without clashing with the modern aesthetic. The finish needed to work with the coastal environment — resistant to humidity, salt air, and temperature swings.

The Solution

We proposed Marmorino with a heavy hand-troweled texture — a finish that reveals the artisan’s movements and creates a tactile, almost sculptural surface. The pigment was a soft limestone white with subtle warm undertones.

Rather than burnishing the surface smooth (as in typical Marmorino applications), we left the final layer deeply troweled, keeping the peaks and ridges visible. The result is a surface that catches light differently across the day, creating subtle shadows and highlights.

The Process

Day 1 — Surface Preparation. Walls were prepped and primed with an alkali-resistant primer. Trim and floors were masked and protected.

Day 2 — Base Coats. Two base coats of lime putty were applied, each troweled thinly and allowed to cure.

Day 3 — First Finish Coat. A first layer of Marmorino was applied in a soft limestone white. This layer was troweled lightly — only enough to even out the surface.

Day 4 — Final Texture Layer. The final layer was applied with a deliberate, heavy trowel technique to create the desired texture. The applicator worked section by section, maintaining a consistent pattern across all walls.

Day 5 — Sealing and Inspection. A breathable sealer was applied, and the finish was reviewed with the client under different lighting conditions.

The Result

The textured Marmorino transformed the space. The walls became a design element rather than a backdrop — catching light in a way that made the room feel warmer and more inviting while still feeling modern.

The client’s comment: “It looks like the walls were always meant to be this way.”

The finish has held up well in the coastal environment, with no signs of mold, mildew, or peeling after two years.
