Our Faux Finish Process — Step by Step

Step 1 — Consultation and Design

Every faux finish project begins with a design conversation. We discuss:

• The material to be mimicked (marble, wood, stone, metal)
• The style and mood of the space
• Color palette and lighting conditions
• The specific surfaces to be finished
• Any inspiration images or reference materials

We provide sample boards so the client can see and approve the finish in their own lighting before installation.

Step 2 — Surface Preparation

• Repair cracks, holes, and imperfections
• Sand and level the surface
• Prime with the appropriate base coat for the finish
• Mask and protect floors, furniture, trim, and adjacent surfaces

Step 3 — Base Coats

We apply the base coat in the intended ground color — the color that will show through the glaze layers. This is a critical step in achieving depth and realism.

Step 4 — Glazing and Layering

This is where the artistry happens. We apply multiple layers of glaze, pigment, and texture to build up the desired effect. Techniques include:

• Strie — fine parallel lines simulating fabric or wood
• Rag rolling — soft mottled texture
• Sponging — organic, clouded variation
• Feathering — soft blending between colors
• Marbleizing — layered veining and translucent depth
• Metallic layering — mica, bronze, or gold pigment application

Each layer is allowed to cure partially before the next is applied. The result is depth, movement, and realism that cannot be achieved with a single coat.

Step 5 — Sealing

Once complete, we seal the finish with a protective topcoat. This provides durability and moisture resistance while preserving the visual depth of the finish.

Step 6 — Final Inspection and Care Instructions

We walk the project with the client, review the finish under natural and artificial light, and provide written care instructions.
