Our Polished Plaster Process — Step by Step
Step 1 — Consultation and Surface Assessment
Every polished plaster project begins with a site visit or detailed video consultation. We assess:
- Substrate type (drywall, plaster, concrete, existing finish)
- Moisture readings and any water intrusion
- Surface flatness and any cracks or damage
- Lighting and how it will interact with the finish
- Room function (living space, bathroom, kitchen, feature wall)
- Desired sheen level and color palette
We provide a written proposal including finish specification, timeline, and required surface preparation.
Step 2 — Surface Preparation
Preparation determines the final result. We do not skip this step.
- Repair all cracks, holes, and imperfections
- Sand and level the surface to a smooth, uniform finish
- Prime with an alkali-resistant primer suitable for lime
- Mask and protect floors, furniture, trim, and adjacent surfaces
In bathrooms and kitchens, we may recommend a waterproof membrane behind the plaster.
Step 3 — Base Coats
We apply 2 to 3 base coats of lime putty. Each coat is troweled on thinly and allowed to cure. Base coats build the foundation and provide an even surface for the finish layers.
Step 4 — Finish Coats
This is where the artistry happens. We apply 2 to 3 thin layers of pigmented polished plaster. Each layer is:
- Troweled on at a specific angle
- Left to cure to the correct stage
- Burnished with a stainless steel trowel to compress and polish the surface
The amount of burnishing determines the final sheen — from satin to mirror-like gloss. High-gloss finishes require additional time on the wall and significantly more skill.
Step 5 — Sealing
Once cured, we apply a breathable sealer or natural wax. Sealing protects against moisture, staining, and everyday wear while preserving the breathability that makes lime-based finishes so effective in Miami.
Step 6 — Final Inspection
We walk the project with the client, review the finish under natural and artificial light, touch up any imperfections, and provide written care instructions.
